The camp went well, in no small part due to the focus and hard work the TTS students that have been contributing to the effort. At the end of the 2nd day, we had almost 1,000 patients come through the camp and be screened and treated for evidence of early-stage cervical cancer as well as a wide range of dental, vision and general medical conditions. TTS students have staffed a wide range of duties that has allowed the camp to process these large numbers not only efficiently, but also with personalized care for each patient. Dr Swee Chong has performed about 35 surgeries on patients with pre-cancerous lesions on their cervix which will effectively re-set their malignancy clocks back to zero. Our dentists and optometrists have also identified 100s of patients that we will be providing treatments for in our clinic after the camp concludes today.
We were all also very lucky to be able to share a very auspicious event with the TTS students today. His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in Ladakh this morning at 8am India time. His motorcade passed very close by the hospital, so we took the students down to the road to join the tens of thousands of locals who lined the highway all the way from the airport to the residential complex. Many of the pilgrims that travelled great distances to be in Leh for His Holiness’s arrival then made their way to our camp. It was an especially dramatic day.
